Modern Products recalls Seasonings due to possible health risk



FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 25, 2010 – ALAMEDA, CA – Modern Products, Inc. is initiating a recall of products manufactured with HVP (Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein) supplied by Basic Food Flavors of Las Vegas, Nevada, because the ingredient has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

“Consumption of products containing Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms) endocarditis and arthritis.”

To date, no illnesses have been associated with any Modern Products seasonings. In addition, random samples covering all HVP batches of concern were sent to an independent laboratory for testing and all results came back negative, but to be safe, FDA’s recommendation to recall product is being followed.

Recalled products were distributed nationwide and sold in retail stores. The following products are being recalled:

Perfect Candy & Packaging Co. Announces a Voluntary Nationwide Recall of Whole Black Pepper in H.D.W. FOODS Labeled Bags



FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 25, 2010 – Reading, Pa – As a result of a nationwide recall of Black Pepper by Mincing Overseas Spice Company and by Dutch Valley Food Distributors, Perfect Candy & Packaging Co is joining in this product recall due to the possibility of contamination with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Perfect Candy & Packaging Co. has issued a voluntary recall for the following product with an H.D.W. Foods Inc. label.

This item packaged and sold within the parameters mentioned is subject to this recall. The item was distributed nationwide. Retailers are advised to remove this product from store shelves. Consumers who have purchased these products are asked to destroy them. C. H. Guenther & Son, Inc. Announces Amended Voluntary Nationwide Recall of several additional products that contain pepper due to Possible Health Risk



FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — San Antonio, TX March 23, 2010 – C. H. Guenther & Son, Inc. today announced a voluntary recall of additional products containing a pepper ingredient that may have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The following products are in addition to products announced earlier in press releases dated 3/17/200 and 3/22/2010.

The recalled products contain black pepper distributed by Mincing Overseas Spice Company. The pepper has been recalled by Mincing because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella is a common food borne pathogen that can cause severe illnesses, including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. While most individuals recover in three to five days without medical intervention, the infection can be life-threatening to young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Blue Line Foodservice Distribution voluntarily recalls “Spice Paks”



FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 23, 2010 – As a result of a recall of Black Pepper by Mincing Overseas Spice Company, Blue Line Foodservice Distribution of Farmington Hills, MI is voluntarily recalling Little Caesars Spice Paks. The Spice Paks are small white packets, approximately 1.5” X 2.5” that contain black pepper and other spices. The Spice Paks may have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The packets do not have lot codes or UPC codes. Before they were removed from the stores, they were available upon request to consumers at many Little Caesars stores in the US, Canada and Mexico. The Spice Paks are not used in making any Little Caesars food products.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. To-date, no illnesses associated with the Spice Paks have been brought to the company’s attention. However, Blue Line Foodservice Distribution has voluntarily initiated this recall because of its commitment to the health and safety of consumers and its commitment to providing them with high quality products.

Consumers who have the Spice Paks in their possession should not use them and should throw them away. The stores have disposed of all Spice Paks in their possession.

No products other than the Spice Pak mentioned above are involved in the recall at the stores concerned.

McCain Foods USA Announces Voluntary Recall of Frozen Potato Product Containing Black Pepper That May Pose Health Risk



FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 19, 2010 – Lisle, IL – McCain Foods USA today announced a voluntary recall of the McCain All American Roaster frozen potato product listed below which contains a pepper ingredient that could be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recalled product contains black pepper which has been recalled by Mincing Overseas Spice Company because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Spice Barn, Inc. Voluntarily Recalls Two Lots of Black Pepper



FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 17, 2010 – Lewis Center, OH – As a result of a recall of Black Pepper by Mincing Overseas Spice Company, Spice Barn is recalling two lots of Black Pepper due to the possibility of contamination with SalmonellaSalmonella is a common food borne pathogen that can cause severe illnesses, including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. While most individuals recover without medical intervention, the infection can be life-threatening in some cases such as young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. There have been no reports of Salmonella-related illness to date in relation to these products.

The Products are:

Malabar Peppercorns Lot MTC-3258 in 1 and 5 Pound Bags
Distributed between: 1/26/10 to 2/8/10.

Ground Black Pepper Lot MO-3258T in 1 and 5 Pound Bags
Distributed between:12/08/09 to 2/8/10.

All items packaged with this lot number are subject to this recall. The items were distributed to a small number of customers in the following states VT, NY, PA, MA, GA, VA, CA, TX, CO, MO, WA, FL, AL, MI, AZ, AR, WA. Spice Barn is contacting each customer directly and offering a replacement or refund. Consumers who have purchased these products are asked not to us them and to destroy the product.
